I recently created an X account as a resource to gather current information about animals and research being performed worldwide. With TikTok and Instagram being the most popular social media platforms, I was unsure of how much I would learn. I was pleasantly surprised!
I have spent the last week scrolling through (and following) the accounts of ecologists, animal behaviorists, animal advocates, organizations, etc, and there is a lot to learn! X has so much valuable information about current petitions, ongoing research, and any animal-related news. I found myself reading a lot of information about animal cognition. There's still so much we don't know. As a marine biologist, I have taken a particular interest to Lynne Sneddon's profile (@LynneUSneddon). She specializes in aquatic biology and fish welfare. She, like many other scientists, frequently shares new research about animals, the impact we have, and ways to improve our interactions that minimize that impact.
Because most of my followers are also advocating for responsible research and care of animals, I have enjoyed sharing resources that allow them to take some action, whether that be through politics or simply expanding their knowledge. It has also allowed me to become more invested. On the other end, I always love sharing the fun clips and incredible photos of animals that are on my timeline. It has been cool for me to see species I never knew existed or ones that behave in unexpected ways. I'm very excited to see where X takes my research over these next few weeks, so be sure to follow me and see what I'm learning!
Hi Lauren, I am also a heavy instagram and tiktok user so I understood where you where coming from when you said you didn't know how X was going to go!!
Hi! I was also unsure with how X was going to go because I am also an avid Instagram and TikTok user. I'm glad that you enjoy X and I believe it can be a great platform to find different researchers! In the next blog you can expand on what researchers and organizations you found and love!
Hi Lauren! I love how you're finding specific information to aquatic biology and seeing how a platform like X has benefited you as a researcher and marine biologist. Maybe in your next blog update you could expand on what differences in information you found in animal behaviorists and animal advocates?
